We Are One

Steve Kirkendall jumping out of cake

Well, I can’t believe how time has flown, but today my blog is a year old. Happy birthday to me – and to everyone reading this, a big thank you!

Lardwatch #21 (happy time making pounds from Bulgaria)

Steve Kirkendall dressed in Bulgarian national costume

In case you’re wondering where I’ve been these last two weeks, wonder no more. I’ve just returned from my summer hols in Bulgaria. Or in my case, bulge-area – I stepped on the scales this weekend and after they’d stopped laughing and wiping the tears from their dial, they said “Weight gain, four pounds”. I did try to point out that two weeks of lying around, drinking beer and eating crisps does not a Charles Atlas make, but they kind of had me over a barrel there.

Now, where’s me hair shirt?

Fri-llustrator-day #25

'I Feel Space' illustration by Josh Cochran

Today we find ourselves in Brooklyn, thanks to It’s Nice That who directed me, using only their map of impeccable taste, to the studio of Josh Cochran. As I said on the very first Fri-llustrator-Day, I don’t like repeating another sites discoveries, but I was so inspired by Mr Cochran’s gear, that I had to share. Plus that fact he has made a few illustrations featuring Astronauts and I’m a sucker for anything in outer space.

His colour pallette is superb and he really is a fantastic draughtsman. Looking at some of his drawings made me exclaim “Blimey!” out loud, they were so intricate. I would really love to see him tackle a graphic novel. One, because I would, and two, because I always feel a bit odd writing a Fri-llustrator post without mentioning comics… mind you, he has produced work for Fantagraphics, so maybe he has some comic-related illustration knocking about somewhere.

Have a look at the Josh Cochran website and discover why people like Esquire, McSweeney’s, the New Yorker, TIME and Wired have all used him. Oh, and there’s also a few really nice motion pieces too to look at, too.

Wonderful stuff, Mr. Cochran!

Lardwatch #20 (the incredible shrinking man*)

Painting of fat Steve Kirkendall bursting out of picture frame

Further to my catalogue of last week’s debachery, I have been informed that Stella Artois have not quite finished replenishing their stocks that I ravaged. And many cows have been slaughtered to again fill the world with the hamburgers I took away from you all with my ravenous appetite. And yet… strangeness is piled upon strangeness like a plot from ‘Lost’ as… I have gained no weight, but instead have shed another pound! I know, I can’t believe it it either!

So what is my secret? Well, I think eating sensibly (and not a great deal) during the week with only miniscule treats (tiny bits of chocolate, no booze) has helped me achieve this. But I’m still waiting to get on the scales, see another great result, then the words “Just Kidding” flash up, before the scales whirl off the register and reveal my true, horrific weight gain.

Or maybe there’s a painting of me in my attic that’s getting slowly fatter…

(*Yes, I’m fed up of those lame weigh-puns, too.)
